The wine and I: the need to have a Master

In recent years, let’s say from 2016 onwards, my attention has turned to the world of natural wines with more conviction than in the past. I noticed that conventional wines were not good for me because after drinking I had an annoying headache that lasted until the next day, a state of malaise that I did not happen to have with natural wines that at most left me the typical one “joy” due to the alcohol that then passed.

I started to approach wines from biodynamic agriculture, I did some research… I discovered the preparation 500, the 501, the lunar influences, the calendar of Maria Thun, Nicolas Jolie and in my research one day I happened to see a video of a character that struck me immediately for his “impertinence” (I like rebels), and I believe that this was for me the beginning of a change, a metamorphosis.

That character, who would later become my Master, was Sandro Sangiorgi…

How much I liked him, I admired his preparation and his clear detachment from the academy… He said some interesting things that made me think, and many of those things I thought even before listening to them from his mouth! I started a real study on him, I found articles, videos, titles of books he wrote… Porthos magazine… I was becoming a “Sangiorgiologist”.

I remember my emotion when his book “The invention of joy” arrived at my house, a book of about 500 pages that I keep like an heirloom, that I always have next to me and that I read and reread, asking myself punctually how you can write so well, I write for pleasure and I manage as I can.

When I got to the champagne chapter, I told myself I had to tell this man a few things, I had to tell him it was a big… that I had never heard anyone talk about wine or the “odorous liquid” with that transport, that passion, that respect, that it seemed there was a love story between him and the wine and not a simple and banal organoleptic examination with the assignment of a final score, he used words for the description of wines that I have never heard pronounced by anyone.

It was October 30th, 2020, I decided to write him a nice letter of admiration, and I noticed that on my computer I had Wikipedia that told me that Sangiorgi was born in Freiburg on October 31, 1962… I told myself I’ll write it and mail it to him tomorrow, what a coincidence I thought.

And so it was…on 31th October i wrote a letter asking me: “who knows if one day I will ever receive an answer”

I’ve wanted to write you this letter for a long time, but between Covid and other commitments I’ve never been able to find the time, or maybe I didn’t have the courage… in every way here I am!
