WineJoyhas gone to the discovery of a rare vine, the Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato that in 1987 obtained the DOC then transformed into DOCG in 2010.
The production area includes the municipalities of Castagnole Monferrato, Grana, Montemagno, Portacomaro, Refrancore, Scurzolengo and Viarigi.
We are in Viarigi in Piedmont, in the heart of the hills of Monferrato.
The village is clinging to the hill, the houses and the streets adapt to this characteristic, with stairs, subways, steep hairpin bends, walls.

Giancarlo, how does the history of your winery begin?
It all starts in 2008 when my partner’s parents, Valentina, after retiring decided to buy a plot of land with adjoining Cascina here in Viarigi.
We are located at 252 meters s.l.m. with a good exposure. The soil is composed of limestone and clay that give the wines aromatic finesse, structure and longevity.
The land was an old abandoned vineyard that, through a series of works, was restored by planting, around 2009, new rooted ruchè, barbera and grignolino.
After 2/3 years the grapes produced were sold to local winemakers, but in 2015 Valentina and I made the decision to manage the winery because of the fragility of the workforce of my in-laws, bringing to the company a mindset aimed at organic cultivation, respect for the land and sustainability.
The reasons for this commitment to safeguarde nature, blend both on our willingness to work and live in a healthy environment, which brings value to our lives and the place that surrounds us, but also on our conviction that only by working well in the vineyard and bringing healthy grapes to the cellar, it is possible to produce a true quality wine.
We used the selected yeasts, only in our first harvest but in the following years starting from 2016, we chose to start the fermentation spontaneously, to use minimal doses of sulfur dioxide not to clarify and not to filter the wine in a heavy way to leave in the glass all the life we had already kept in the vineyard.

BARBERA D’ASTI 2020 (BALORDO)
A beautiful elegant ruby colour, the nose is perceived blackberry, cherry and raspberry. Acidity is well spread on the tongue giving juiciness and desire to return to drink. The wine is balanced because all the elements are well together.

RUCHÉ DI CASTAGNOLE MONFERRATO DOCG 2019
A grape, the Ruché, fascinating and mysterious …named “the prince Monferrato”. This wine comes from calcareous-clay soils in the locality of Viarigi in the province of Asti. A splendid bright ruby red, with a rose-dog nose but also red fruits and wet earth, in the mouth is enveloping and elegant. Serve at 16-18 second C.

GRIGNOLINO D’ASTI 2020
This Grignolino smells of blood orange, pomegranate, wild rose and blackberry. In the mouth the wine is balanced, elegant and enjoyable thanks to the rounded tannins.
The taste-olfactory persistence is good. It is one of those wines that well match seafood dishes.

RUCHÉ DI CASTAGNOLE MONFERRATO RISERVA 2016
Ruby colour with garnet edges. The nose is really intriguing: humus, balsamic notes, strawberries under spirits. In the mouth is marked by a slight softness, the matter is felt … this wine is almost chewable but elegance and balance are not lost. The epilogue, in the name of freshness, makes you want the next sip. Long and persistent ending.
