October 23th, 2021: we are leaving our hotel, an ancient monastery of 1100 renovated, just 5 minutes far from the Winery where we are waited for, from where – opening the windows this morning – we admired the hill where is placed the small village of Ortonovo (today Town of Luni), wrapped in a particular light, as if the sun whished us to see it in the foreground, in all its brightness.

It’s ten o’clock and it’s a beautiful day… the sparkling air that caught us while we were climbing the small external staircase, that led us to the breakfast room, it’s already a nice warmth, the sun gives us good hopes that we will not need any jacket once we arrive to the vineyard. We get into the car, Alessandro is waiting for usa round 11 … in the meantime, we enjoy the view, we can see houses, things, greenery and sights that in the darkness, we didn’t notice the night before.

Simona: Alessandro, where are we?

Alessandro: We are in Lunigiana, in Ortonovo near Carrara, now named Town of Luni, taking up the ancient name of the Roman city… the port where the marbles left for Rome. Here we have land that borders Tuscany, in fact over there is the hill of Monteverde which is part of Tuscany and that one is Nicola’s hill which is part of Liguria.

Terra della Luna Vineyard consists of three hectares arranged in a single body.

In my vineyards there is gray clay 50 cm from the surface, there’s only here… We also have a particular microclimate, in fact there are really imprtant thermal changes between the night and the day that, if on one hand in viticulture is a positive factor, on the other hand it causes humidity and therefore diseases such as downy mildew, funguslike organisms, affecting the vine, with which I’ve always fought and sometimes made me lose vintages, I mean I have not harvested, In fact, since 2009 I have lost three years.

Currently not to use chemicals against peronospora, I’m trying an all-natural sweet orange essence, which is also pleasantly scented together with minimal amounts of copper and sulfur. Unfortunately, mildew can attack the bunches in early times, before or during flowering, resulting in the loss of a whole harvest.

In the vineyard I make the green manure for the oxygenation of the soil, I do not use chemical fertilizers not to destroy the vitality of the soil.

My idea of respect for the environment starts already in the cellar, here there is no gas but just heat pumps.

The cultivation system of my plants is in Guyot, I do non-invasive pruning, I mean I do not trim the old part to dry and then I cut the new part, but I always cut the fresh part. When you cut the old wood this suffers and can die, so if you let it dry it could give a bad appearance to the vineyard and my purpose is to protect the entire vineyard.

OSÈ DI LUNA 2020

Slightly veiled black cherry colour.
The smell reveals delicate earthy notes, humus, wet earth and a background of cherry and ripe peach.
The impact on the taste is lively due to the presence of a pleasant effervescence formed by the method of refermentation in bottle.
The wine lies on the tongue leaving after swallowing a nice feeling of cleanliness.
The finish confirms the odorous notes perceived at the beginning combined with a pleasant taste-olfactory persistence.

Color gold just veiled. On the nose notes of ripe apricot, baked apple and white grape pulp.
The entrance into the mouth is straight and tapered, comes a light pétillant and then the salt… elements in good balance between them.
The pleasantness of the final juiciness is a strong reminder to the next sip, In fact, this wine makes drinkability one of its strong points.
Beautiful taste-olfactory persistence.

Color gold just veiled. The nose is slightly and pleasantly oxidized, delicate iodine notes and a hint of talcum powder.
In the mouth can be perceived tannins due to the method of maceration on the skins that gives a good verticality and persistence.
After swallowing remains a nice feeling of cleanliness, the wine seems to run away but despite this it has a good drinkability.

VIGNALI DI LUNA IGT ROSSO 2017

Lively ruby red colour.
The entrance in the mouth is marked by a nice acidic whisper, the wine seems to be at ease on the on the tongue and covers it with a pleasant bitter note.
Tannin does not invade, on the contrary… it expresses itself as a velvet and makes the wine elegant and never banal. This is certainly a wine with easy drinkability and good a persistence.
A small poem that at the table finds great margins of matching such as pizza.

Ruby color, on the nose hints of earth, undergrowth, light tire and red meat.
Wine flows on the tongue with extreme ease, tannins are enveloping and give the wine elegance and drinkability. The taste remains well balanced and clean. Persistent finish. This Grenache born in Liguria, is a wine of character.

LUN’ANTICA IGT 2018

This is a late harvest Vermentino, made with grapes harvested in October 2018 on a soil where gray clay is 50 centimeters deep.
Of a deep yellow color, barely veiled.
To the nose are perceived delicate notes of yellow peach, sage, medlar and a little wax in the background.
The entrance in the mouth is saline, the wine stretches on the tongue in a participatory way, Its tension and well-integrated tannins make it captivating from start to the end.
The epilogue is elegant, precise…
This wine has a good drinkability and taste-olfactory persistence.
